Improving the capacity of international publication of VNUHCM

Annual increase of international publication

According to the statistics of the Scopus database in the period of 2012-2021, the rate of international article publication of the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) increased continuously by an average of over 30%/year; in which the number of publications in Q1 and Q2 journals of VNUHCM contributed 67% of the total and showed a tendency to increase year by year.

Regarding the publications in top journals, from 2017 to 2022, the total number of international publications reached 7,837 articles published in ISI/Scopus indexed international journals. The ratio of articles per doctoral degree holder increases gradually by 2020 and 2021 to 1.23 and 1.33 respectively. By December 2022, the number of international publications at VNUHCM reached 1,913 articles in the Scopus database, reaching 77% of the 2002 plan. In particular, in the field of basic research, scientists of VNUHCM have cooperated with domestic and foreign institutions to publish research works in the world’s leading scientific journals such as Science, Nature… many articles in very prestigious journals with a very high IF impact index (>69).

Position improvement in international rankings

The above international publication has made an important contribution to the academic reputation criteria, publication criteria, and citations in university rankings, helping to improve the position of VNUHCM in international university rankings. According to the ranking results of QS Education, VNU-HCM is in the top 801-1,000 in the world, ranked 167th in Asia and 37th in Southeast Asia. The results of QS rankings over the years show that the position of VNUHCM in Asia has continuously improved, from the top 33.3% in 2018 to the top 22% of the best universities in this region.

According to the QS ranking, VNUHCM continues to be the leading institution in the country in the criteria of reputation with academic peers at 89th place and reputation with employers at 117th place, in the top of the universities with the best reputation in Asia.

According to THE ranking, VNUHCM continues to be in the top 401+ universities operating under 50 years, the best rated in the world. This is the 3rd consecutive year that VNUHCM has been featured in this ranking.

Expansion of international academic networks

Through the sharing of internationally published data, VNUHCM has issued many policies to promote international project cooperation activities and outstanding international academic networks such as:

  • Cooperative projects with MINATEC – France (construction and development of nanotechnology and science); University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of California at Berkeley (UCB) – USA (development of research groups in the field of nanostructured materials and molecules);
  • Formation and development of cancer research; Synopsys, Toshiba industrial corporations,… (development of IC technology); Intel Corporation (training and transfer of high-performance computing technology); Netherlands (climate change program),…
