Utilizing Resources from International Cooperation for the Development of Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City

The year 2022 witnessed the achievements of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) in launching over 80 international projects, bringing VNUHCM significant resources to implement the 2021-2025 Strategic Plan.

Technical and financial support from international projects have provided VNUHCM necessary resources to enhance its faculty and staff capabilities, training quality, scientific research, innovation, and infrastructure development. The major projects include:

1.Vietnam National University Development Project – VNUHCM Subproject ($100 million~ funded by the World Bank);

2.Partnership for Higher Education Reform ($15.62 million~ funded by USAID);

3.Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative – Mekong Program ($5 million~ funded by USAID);

4.Planning and Establishing a Sustainable Smallholder Rice Chain (SRP) in the Mekong Delta (AUD$4.3 million~ funded by the Australian Government);

5.Strengthening Agricultural Higher Education of VNUHCM ($9.09 million~ funded by KOICA, South Korea).

Alongside internal development projects, VNUHCM also implemented many international projects in association with localities, contributing to the knowledge transfer for national socio-economic development. Some typical projects are the Planning and establishing a sustainable smallholder rice chain in the Mekong Delta project (funded by ACIAR, Australia), the AI/IoT employed in management of Tram Chim national park project (funded by Aus4Innovation), and the project on strengthening Vietnam’s legal system for sustainable marine fishing (funded by the Walloon-Brussels Region).

In addition, several international projects began to have components regarding university-business linkage. Promoting university-business cooperation is also one of the VNUHCM’s missions. Along with international projects, VNUHCM will be helped to enhance connectivity and develop effective university-business cooperation programs and models in the future.

International cooperation facilitates the implementation of practical programs and projects, contributing to the development of VNUHCM. In the context of the increasingly limited investment budget of the Government, international cooperation has provided considerable extra resources. In order to promote project development effectively and attract international resources, VNUHCM will actively expand relations with many partners in the region and around the world and keenly seek international funding and aid. Additionally, VNUHCM will also focus on ensuring the effectiveness and sustainability of ongoing projects to build up and consolidate the trust of foreign sponsors and partners, providing good foundation to develop new projects.
